First post from the lyrical physicist

I actually garnered the nickname the Lyrical Physicist from a dude who studied social science.  Sharing lyrics, waiting for a meeting to start.  And he realized I wasn't just an engineer, I was an engineer with a physics degree too.

Yes, I'm blogging.  As if a full time job, a family, and trying to finish my first album isn't enough...  I really have a passion for music.  Not just creating and playing it, but listening and understanding the creative process.  And so, here I am.  Sitting in the living room, squinting because I wasn't smart enough to put curtains on those blasted windows and too lazy to move.

Okay, I'm moving.  I couldn't see anymore.

So, I don't quite know what I'm doing.  I've never blogged.  More to come I suppose.  For now I'm happy thinking I'm just going to write about music and why I love it.  Maybe talk about a few of my favorite bands and songs here and there.  Stay tuned Loves.

Hobby, Passion, Career?

Howdy music makers! Today I would like to discuss the varying degrees of commitment for artists out there in the not-quite-famous realm of music. Many of my posts are for those who are making music a second career or want it to be much more than a hobby. I’m sure there are many out there though who may struggle to relate to those articles because music is important to them, but they don’t see a need for monetizing it or being deliberate in marketing or building a fan base. Ways to Show Your Support for Artists

Seems that most folks enjoy music.  We don't all enjoy the same music, but that's why we have so many genres and artists from which to choose.  I have favorite musicians and bands that I have supported for years.  And given that I've been producing my own music as well and interacted with some wonderful fans, I figured why not tell you what I'm finding to be great ways to support artists.  Sarah's top picks for supporting artists: Buy Something!  Okay... money talks.  If you want music, pay for music.  There is a reason why I own a half dozen Collective Soul albums.  I've been a fan since high school and I want them to continue creating as long as they are willing and able.  If you expect an artist to continue to make albums for your enjoyment, then support them monetarily.  This could be anything from buying a single mp3 download from Bandcamp to buying their box set and a t-shirt. Less is More Perhaps

More releases or fewer... I can never decide.  Certainly keep them coming, but how often?  This is a thinking-aloud piece if you haven't figured that out. Some people are constantly creating (I being one of them) and enjoy doing quick improvisations or creating on the fly. However, not every piece I create gets posted or published or monetized. Then there are other artists I know that release something every time I turn around. Some of them release amazing things routinely, but with others I do hear a lack of quality. I’m certainly not arguing that one way is right or wrong. Frequent releases work well for some genres and very talented improvisational players. For others it may not be the best method. I'm going to hit the pros and cons of releasing multiple works and I heartily encourage comments and discussion.
